Scope Rings Help Request.
« on: January 02, 2020, 12:08:53 PM »
Good morning Nation,  Long time lurker here, and first post.
Ive recently acquired a Weatherby Mark V in 300 Wby Mag, probably about 1952 vintage South Gate.   I wish to mount a Vortex Viper HS 4-16 x 50 mm scope with 30 mm tube.  I wont be installing a muzzle break, or shooting this rifle much.  (Its too pretty to use), and will be mostly a safe queen. I would like to have the scope mounted to the rifle as low as possible.  On other rifles, I have used DNZ Game reapers, of which I have developed a great affinity for, however I don't believe that DNZ makes rings for these early models. I am open to any and all suggestions regarding other brands of mounts.
Ive read that many members are quite pleased with Talley products, and certainly would consider their rings. Could I please get commentary regarding differences between their Lightweight mounts vs. their steel bases and rings?
I would also appreciate model numbers if possible.
Thank’s in advance for your considered replies!  I really enjoy the forum!

I will give them a call. Regarding the year of manufacture, I personally established the date range by viewing a chart on the net, so I could certainly be mistaken.
Serial number is :  H735xx
Thank you for the information!

Late 1972 or early 1973 would be my best guess

Thank you for the dating!  Looks like I only missed it by 20 years! Furniture is really pretty, and I look forward to shooting it!

Very nice. I like the Japanese built rifles. They usually have a lighter coloured and nicer wood. If you wanted to match the gloss finish of the action and barrel then Leupold do gloss bases and rings that will look really nice on your rifle. I use them on all my gloss rifles.
Also I know why you want to keep your rifle as a safe queen, but you really should get it out on a hunt. Buy a neoprene stock cover and then you wont have to worry about damaging it.

It is getting quite difficult to find gloss scopes and rings -good to know!  I didnt know anyone made neoprene rifle covers. Do you have a brand preference on the cover?
Thanks for your replies!

Yep it sure is getting hard finding gloss rifle parts. Scopes too. Leupold are really the only company left doing them. But they have stopped putting the 24 carat gold emblem and ring on them. They look terrible with the standard bronze colour and gloss black scope tube. Well that's just my opinion anyways.
Here are some links to those covers,

The 2nd one is what I have as they were easy to get in Australia. A US store wouldn't come up on my google search so I just put in a YouTube link.
I use just the barrel sleeve when using any blued rifle on my ATV as the dust gets in my rifle holder and acts link sandpaper.

Aussie, My typical hunt doesn't involve 4-wheeler rides, although here in Colorado, wind is a very available commodity hence blowing grit and sand. Thank you for the links!  At least for now I’m favoring the Boca cover, but I plan to research a bit more. I really appreciate your help with the availability of the covers as I had no idea that they were an option!

No worries mate. The Boca cover is the better of the two I would think. I plan on getting one of them as well. I just bought the other one as it was in my local gun shop. It is amazing how very few people know about them. I have put quite a few shooters onto them.

That's a beautiful rifle, what a Weatherby should look like.  There's no such thing as a rifle that's too beautiful to shoot or hunt with, use it don't abuse it and it'll be pretty forever.
Nothing is better than a Weatherby, big bore magnum, or a Colt.

I do have a couple of Vanguard synthetics that I use for Elk and Deer , a 300 Weatherby mag, and a 30-06 that are both sub MOA, and both have served me very well. It will however be enjoyable to use the Mark V next year!
Thank you all for your suggestions and help!  Looks like Im going with the Talley lightweights, and will get a Boca Shield to protect the finish while hunting.
