Not sure if it is true or not, but I've seen that circulated before.  Makes you wonder though.

This is false. I just talked to a Marlin rep yesterday trying to track down a .45-70 lever action. Not only are they open they are low on stock and the .45-70 specifically is flying off the shelf!

Yeah I figure a 45-70 is a good car thumper if you need one.

The company that became Freedom Group bought Remington, along with other firearms manufacturers and ammunition producers. Has the quality of their products improved? I can’t say so with the exception of Barnes Bullets.
I know it is simplistic, but the bottom line of profits and projected profits don’t tell the whole story when it comes to quality and reliability.

Agreed. I have two older Remington  700's, 1973 and 1997. I would not but one of the new ones.

looking at the .45-70 to carry during spring bear which is when I start scouting every year. I have had a couple situations that I didn't feel comfortable (coming across cubs & Sow) and twice in the last year have walked in bow range of 2 big bores. They are just black bears but I don't trust the draw on my .257 with a scope if a bear is coming in hot at close range.

You should practice a little shooting just looking down the side of the barrel at 50 feet and 25-30 feet. You'd be surprised how good you are on target at those close ranges not using your scope or sights.

I would consider a 444 or a 450 Marlin as a  great alternate chose !  Kinda tough to practice with a rifle you don't have for those of us that can't or won't read!

I used to have a marlin .450 I loved it but didn't have a use for it when I lived in KY. I sold it and got a nice bow and still kick myself over it. Its not that I couldn't hit a bear looking down the barrel but I don't trust a bad shot with a .257 to stop a charging bear. I also have a .300 win mag but its a tank to carry when you are doing 10 miles and 2000 ft of elevation.

That posting is about a 10 year old rumor that Marlin has debunked.
