Something coming from Winchester?

Seems the .277 is getting some attention recently with this and the 277 sig fury which is probably the first 80k psi commercial cartridge .

I think we will see some sort of long range Winchester xpr in the 6.8 Western before we do a M70 .
Which to Winchesters/Brownings credit the Xpr is a good rifle for the money .

  I agree the 270 caliber has been needing some improvements  a long time over do.  Time will tell where it goes.  We are still stretching it out and shrinking it down.  No outside the box innovations with a whow factor.

Zonie, I agree but there just aren't the great options for bullets, particularly to feed the high BC craziness in .277 as there is in .264 and .284. There are certainly good developments from amongst others Berger, but if that changed on a large scale I think the cartridges would follow.

I don’t see a hole a new 270 is going to fill. Hunting, what would it do better than the 270 win, 270 Weatherby. Competition, 100-600 yards to much powder and recoil, 600-1000 yards it would have to come out with high bc bullets with it and maybe it would fine a small following, past 1000, would have to have a large enough case and bullets to get in this small group
Combined that and l don’t see high sales. You would also have to have a marketing machine like Hornady behind it

African Leadwood and 257,  I agree.   I've got three 270 win's that have been in my family starting from the early 50's to the early 80's,   pre-64 Win , Rem 721 and Ruger 77 tang safety pre-warning  all great rifles and all darn accurate.   Members of the family have passed their rifles down  starting with my mom and dad  and family taken a lot of Elk with all of them.  I've always thought the 270 Win in particular are more of a Finesse cartridge  the 270's I've played with are all very accurate regardless of who made them.   I think this leads us to in some ways why the shooting public hasn't really pressed the bullet makers to produce match grade high BC bullets until fairly recently and then in no real numbers as compared to some other calibers.   I do think a lot of shooters think of 270's in general as more of hunting cartridges and that's very true.   A friend is currently building a 270 Win  AI  in a slightly longer barrel for deer hunting long ranges.  I don't know what bullets he will be using/testing but I'm sure it will be an 800 yd  +  deer rifle.

Not to mention...Nosler came out with the 27 Nosler this year.

IF I was going to build some kind of long range rifle chambered in a .277 cartridge, I probably would start with a 27 Nosler instead of a 6.8 Western.

I find Winchester’s timing of entry into this particular niche market segment to be confusing.

Could it be a 6.5 on the top of the 300 win case? Are they going to try to keep up with the Jones's? Maybe lets wait and see if it's something that everyone will spend money on.

What is out there: 6.5 Creedmoor, 260 Remington, 6.5x284 Norma, 6.5-06 A Square, 6.5x55 Swede, 6.5 Rem Mag, 6.5 PRC, 6.5 Weatherby RPM, 26 Nosler, 6.5-300 Wby and a few other assorted former military cartridges.
Remember when short-fat cases were the rage? What is missing from the line up is a short-fat “magnum” capacity such as. WSM case necked down to .264, and who cares what its called. A 26-300 Win Mag is neither short nor fat and what does it do (or could it do) the other long action types don’t do?
At least Winchester has the ability to make the ammo and the components. Who is lined up to make the rifles? Take a lesson from Nosler and have the ammo ready when the rifles hit the stores. Maybe Win is doing what Hornady did with the 6 ARC and everything for production and rifle manufacturers is done, ready to present to the guns and ammo buying world.

It could be. The 6.5 WSM (as a wildcat cartridge, the 6.5 Leopard) has been around for a while now.

I don’t believe it would outperform the 6.5 PRC however...

Reason why I mentioned the 300 win case,it would put it very close to the 6.5-300 performance or at least 26 nosler performance.

You hit the nail on the head if ammo is useless without a firearm, a firearm is useless without ammo. And ammo shortage will kill any fire you hoped would burn you into the marketplace!

I remember when the masses were saying how the creedmoor would be a flash in the pan, now you can buy guns and ammo from all sorts of manufacturers. A 6.5 rem mag would be on the radar if i could find me a nice 700 in it! Most likely a dust collector, but a cool one! I've admitted i have a problem so it makes it alright!

100% pure speculation! I'll still keep a open mind on this till it is "unveiled" I don't own anything with the Winchester name on it I don't like, so far. 2 model 70's, loaded ammo, brass and sub moa 12ga. slugs!

if that is what's they are bringing it out, I agree, with you guys, I don't see it being the next hot caliber, but who knows, only time will tell.
