Ultra Lightweight or Fibermark

7mm Weatherby Magnum, is one any better than the other, or is stock/barrel/action quality pretty much the same, except for fluting and a little weight?

The Fibermark has a #2 contour barrel and is pillar bedded. The Ultra Lightweight has a #1 contour barrel and has an aluminum bedding block. #1 contours have a history of being finicky and if fast follow up shots are needed during a hunt, don't count on your shot group to stay super tight. (due to the thin barrel heating and all barrels are different) The 5.75 lb. Ultra Lightweight will generate 10 more ft/lbs. of recoil than the 8 lb. Fibermark. Adding scopes of the same weight keeps the recoil the same. Which is better? thats up to you.

I have a fibermark and an ULW, 340 and 243 though, my fiber...I often debate if I should have got the accumark instead...

the ULW has a #1 fluted barrel which is far too whippy for me, imo.

good luck.

All things considered, I would go for the Fibermark. I held a Fibermark and was amazed at the lack of weight. Yes, it’s a close second for the Lt Weight and if weight is THE concern then it would be different. Get the Fibermark and shoot shoot shoot.

depends on what kind of hunting you do, if you doing a lot of hiking, the ultra lights are nice. True the barrels tend to heat up fast shooting from the bench, but in when hunting you only going to take 1-2 shots. The fibermark is great for most hunting though.

Good info, and exactly what I was looking for.  I am trying to get my Stainless Fibermark back from the gentleman that I sold it to in 2012.  Chances are good because I think I have finally found what he is looking for in trade.  He wouldn't sell the rifle back to me, only trade.  We shall soon see !

well, I was able to get it back.  I have my old (WS prefix) Mark V Stainless Fibermark in 270 Winchester.  The person that had it for the last several years put a few dents in the finish of the composite stock.  I'm going to look into getting a new Bell & Carlson stock for it.  The options are: 6 lug #1 contour, and 6 lug #2 contour.  Does the 270 Win have a #1 contour?  It's every bit as thin as the ultra lightweight barrel, just not fluted.  I guess I should pull measurements, unless you guys can lead me in the right direction.
