Need Help in tanning my coyote hide
« on: February 11, 2009, 05:35:32 PM »
Ok, so I harvested a coyote and tanned the hide with a kit I bought from a sporting goods store. In the final step I applied tanning oil and its been drying for three weeks. The instructions say it should take less than two. I've had a fan on it the entire time, but one day I let it sit out in the sun to speed up the drying process. The problem is now its still not dry and has a "ripe" smell to it. The hair is still holding strong, but I don't know what to do about the smell and the lack of drying. Should I re-salt it? Is the hide lost? Any advice will help.

Boy I don't know.  Most taxidermists send the hides to a professional tannery anymore due to the work involved.  Our taxidermist uses several tannerys around the country, and all have been first rate.  You may get on the net and call one of them up.  Did you flesh it correctly ?
