Moose Hunt

As mentioned, we are heading to the Thunder Bay area for a Moose hunt this coming Saturday. We are thinking of making the 18 hour drive straight thru so we can get to an extra day of hunting rather than stopping over before heading to camp the following day.
The weather will make that decision for us. If the driving is good we may push on but if we get a snow storm like last year we will stay over at Hearst again.
Last year was our first year hunting this area and on the last day of our hunt we finally found where they were bedding...of course.
The forecast looks good, not extremely cold but forecasting snow which is good for finding tracks. Sure hope I can post pictures of a bull, cow or calf for your folks.

How will you carry out the moose meat? What rifle(s) will you use? Having never hunted moose I think it would be an awesome experience, especially since they live in places I've have not hunted.

Most are using a 30-06. My cousin and I are using a .270 WSM. As far as packing out the moose it will all depend on where the animal lands. We are bringing a ATV to pull out if the land and snow will allow, if not, we will quarter it out on tarps under man power.

I didn’t see the hunters I have seen in past years a few weeks ago when I was up for opener.

We have a limited draw season in our Zone. Never saw a moose hunter but on had called earlier in the year about hunting.
Wife saw 9moose on the ranch about 3 weeks ago and a young lady here hunting had 5 cross a fence in front of her. She got a great video of them.

Other than getting a tag, your biggest problem in moose hunting is getting all of the meat out.  I don't know where Thunder Bay is, but reading that you've had a tag two years in a row I'm assuming you will be hunting in either Alaska or Canada.  You mentioned that you will have an ATV which would really help in getting the meat out.  You also mentioned of dragging (?) the meat out on tarps.  If the snow is deep enough I can see where that might be possible, however without deep snow, I would think that the tarps would be ripped to shreds.  One or two of those heavy duty plastic sleds would drag easily over snow or forest litter.

I've packed 3 moose out of the woods using my horses.  For two of them I had help from one of my buddies, but the 3rd one I was by myself.  Just getting the head and cape on top of a horse by your self can be a chore.

I shot both of my moose with my .30 Gibbs and 180 grain Partition bullets, my friend shot his moose with his 7 mm Rem mag.  All 3 were one shot kills.

buffybr....Thunder Bay is in North Ontario Canada. I use that as a reference point but we are heading a few hours north east of Thunder Bay near the bush line where life stops to exist....lol

If an ATV is not an option we will quarter the animal and make several trips using the tarp to get it out. Plastic sleds are another good idea, we may have to purchase a few for future hunts. Plus the outfitter we are staying at said that for a fee he will send one of his guides to help us. This is a DIY hunt, we are only renting the cabins from them.
Last year was our first in this area and we learnt a lot, found there beds the last day of the hunt.
