Caribou with Mark V Lightweight Deluxe

My first post. Thanks for having me.

We can't have an empty forum here so I'll kick this one off with one of my typically mundane posts. ;)

In '01 the wife and I hunted caribou in Quebec. My weapon of choice was the Mark V Lightweight Deluxe in 30-06 caliber. Mine is one of only two Deluxe Lightweights I have seen. The other was a 308. To my knowledge they are not currently in production.

Chime in and tell us what you hunt, and which Weatherby you hunt it with. Thanks.

I should have looked at the online Weatherby catalog before making my first post. The lightweight deluxe is indeed back in the lineup. Oh crap! That means I'll be spending some money soon. :( ;)

and they be nice rifles .... I have one from Gander Mtn. in 7-08 (its a factory second, screwed up checkering on the stock), it gets shot for the first time this week-end if all goes well.  Just wish Weatherby had a short six-lug action.  Trigger at 2#'s and a FX-III 6x42 sittin' atop.

Yes, they are VERY nice rifles. Almost too nice. When we got back from Quebec, there were some areas on that shiny wood finish that were not so shiny any more - not beat up, just scuffed a bit from being tossed around inside the case. It kind-of broke my heart to see those dull spots, and I realized that it would just continue with field use. In retrospect, I probably could have buffed the spots with some polishing compound or jeweler's rouge. What I wanted to do was remove the plastic finish altogether and apply an oil finish, but I didn't know how the rosewood forend tip and grip cap would respond.

I never thought of the composite-stocked rifles as pretty, but I am gaining respect for their toughness and utility. What I really need is a Mark V Fibermark Composite in 30-378. Yes, I really need it. Really! ;)

I don't let the fact that my rifles get dings, dents and scratches.  Just means I used 'em.  The stock on my Sporter is looin' a little rough but that's fine by me.  I guess since my Deluxe has a 2nd stock I will feel even less bad about its outcome.

Give Accurate Innovations a call.  They installed one of their aluminum bedding blocks into a Deluxe stock, removed the gloss finish and gave it an oil finish.  They did have issues with the rosewood but somehow they overcame them.  That rifle had a SS MkV action dropped into it and it was awesome.  It quite honestly was the best looking Weatherby I have ever seen.  SS barreled acion in an oil finished Deluxe stock is quite striking (you guys listening??) :)

In regards to the Fibermark ... pretty is as pretty does.  A rifle that does its job beautifully cannot be anything else but beautiful.  I have a SS Fibermark in 280 (which hopefully will get shot this weekend too if I get time to adjust the trigger) that is also a factory second.  If that rifle shoots anything like I think it should my other Roy's could get quite lonely in the safe!
