Black bear hunt
« on: September 06, 2022, 06:07:10 PM »
I am heading to Burks Falls Ontario for our annual black bear hunt tomorrow morning for 5 days
We have been baiting for a few weeks now and have good bears on the trail cams.
I am packing my Excalibur G340 Matrix Crossbow and shooting 125 grain G5 Striker V2 Crossbow broadheads again this year, took a nice 200 lb bear last year with it. Most of our group are using rifles. Everything from a 35 Whelan, 270 WSM to 30.06

I will post pictures when I get back....

Nice Terry
I am up in 3 lakes MI. With my son on his first bear hunt. We got up on the 3rd and started baiting. No hits yet. We put in our 3rd and final bait today on a overgrown logging rd. With fresh tracks coming and going. I'm just the guide on this hunt. But looking forward to seeing my son bag his first bear. Season opens tomorrow the 7th.
Best of luck to you and your party.

Good luck to ya!  Man, that is on my list of hunts to do.  Hopefully one day.  I can't wait to see pictures and read your report.

Our Black Bear hunt was unsuccessful.
I knew it would be tough with only 4 days to get a bear to hit the bait. We put in our 3 baits over the first 2 days. And only one got hit 6 days latter.
The Bear hit the bait at 2 in the afternoon and we set up by 5 pm same day. He came back at dark
But with the swirling wind and a storm ready to hit. He got our wind and we heard him run off.
We stayed A extra day bur he did not return to the bait.
It was exciting though.
With the locals allowed to put in 12 baits for cash
It was hard to lure a bear away from established  baits. Next time. We either make the 500 mile trip twice like we use too and bait sooner. Or buy a bait. I like doing it myself but in the end it would be cheaper to buy a bait.
Darn still can't post a pic on here.
But it was a full week with my son. And A good time.

Bummer you guys didn't get a bear.  But, that's part of hunting.  If it was easy, it would be boring.  Where were you guys hunting?

At least you got out there and nothing bad happened. Better luck next time.
Come and take it.

An old Marine Corps buddy from Maine has been after me to come up and hunt bear with him. Finally made it happen last week. Had a great time and tagged a average size bear. I cant thank my buddy enough. Maine is a very beautiful state with wonderful opportunities for anything outdoors. I learned alot from him and a few new friends that I made while there. Gotta say... probably one of the best times hunting I've ever had.

Terry, it's too bad that you didn't get to repeat last years karma. Hunters  know that our bloodsport is satisfied (get their fix) with having been in the hunt, feeling alive in the woods, and sharing the good time with friends. Opening day success for the younger hunters in the group will fuel the fire for years to come. Yours was a big group, but the more the merrier and the more story telling there is.  :) 8) Congrats to all!
