Wood stocks
« on: June 06, 2023, 04:53:51 PM »
The topic of continuing to use wood stocks is back. The durability of a composite stock, such as a Bell & Carlson Medalist, needs no explanation. I have Medalists on two Vangaurds. Accuracy and fit of those stocks is worth every penny. I think cost is the biggest consideration when going for an after market stock and I know Medalists are far from the expensive side of things. Frankly, color choices of stocks has little to do with it since a few can of paint and a pattern template can take care of things.

I like the Eurostock that was available on Mark Vs several years ago. Pilar bed the receiver screws and the action of a Eurostock, plus a couple of inches beyond the front recoil lug and you’ve got the best of both worlds for the feel and looks of wood and the resistance to warping and shifting you get with a Medalist (or similar models). A walnut stock just like I described stocked with a 7mm Weatherby withstood hunting in an ice storm with no changes in accuracy the next day——the big White tail buck that fell like a cheap tent is my proof. I put at least three coats of oil into the stock, including the barrel channel so the wood had a great barrier.

What kind/brand of oil do you use?  I have a new Euromark stock which I believe has been oiled but I'm not sure of it.

I used TruOil and was sure to let it soak in before wiping it dry, waiting a day or so and reapplying. The walnut became a little darker with each coat. I do t know if there is a coloring agent in the TruOil or not. To me, the oil seems very much like boiled linseed oil or pure linseed oil.

You can use johnson paste wax that will let the beauty of the wood to shine through. My father was a stock maker and learned this early in his time as a stock maker.

Once of my collection pieces was to have a euromark in each caliber from 240-340 and this started a couple years ago. From top to bottom it goes:

378 - 300 - 7mm - 257 - 240 and 22.250 (not a euro it was some kind of custom varmint with mat finish - was too cool not to share IMO)

I also have a 270 not pictured in my office and another 257 (it's RH) that is probably the most used euro i have but stock is pretty decent. Oddly enough ive been able to collect several in LH models for myself. Anyone know of a nice 340 so i can put this project to bed? :)

Nice little stable of wood! Do you also shoot well left handed, or just like to have some that are different?
Come and take it.

All I can is WOW, that is a beauty of a collection.  I pretty much did what you did, but with the Deluxe, but I can see where the Euros are a lot prettier than the Deluxe.

Tex - I am a southpaw and two of my 4 sons are as well, the other two shoot with that "other" hand people use! ;) lol

So i have a mixed bag collection. I have a similar collection of lazers and deluxe models jap/german/usa. I'm not sure if i will passdown a collection line or make sure they all have a variety of each (most likely since i have left and right handed models).

High gloss finished rifles are still the rave and I love them, I had just gotten two of these pictured in and had them thought i would share. Been fun - didn't think i'd ever find a 240 and finally did and she's a shooter.

I also shoot on both shoulders - because I am right-handed, but have a left dominant eye. My eyes want to shoot left, but the rest of me wants to shoot right LOL.
Come and take it.

I am a lefty as well, but right eyed dominant.  My rifles and shotguns are all right handed. When qualifying with a semi auto handgun, my "offside" shooting is as good and maybe better as my "strongside" . That drove the deputy doing the qualifying crazy as I'd beat him every time!
