Your defense round

Your defense round
« on: August 11, 2023, 07:45:51 AM »
Over the years, I've carried probably all of them at one time or another (Gold Dot, Golden Saber, Critical Duty, Sig Elite, etc.) Currently carrying Federal HST but it's time to get some fresh replacement rounds (I switch out to fresh rounds every year or two). What are you guys carrying these days? Most of the current stuff supposedly performs pretty well.
Come and take it.

I've always carry Federal Hydrashocks, they shoot well in my G-19, and that is what Miami Metro Dade Police department carried at one time.  I would see what works in your handgun, if the gun cycles, and the POI of those cartridges.

I use different ammo in different guns. The Hydra shocks work well in most but not all. Golden Sabers seem to feed better in my 17 and 19 but not in my 26. The Lehigh 115 gr works real well in my 357 Sig.  :)

Probably better stuff out there, but I like the Win,Super X,silver tip, HP.Both my Wife and I carry the S&W,medium sized,M&P 380.We both shoot the other's pistol to similar POI and it's just nice I think for both of us to be familiar with the other person's gun.I like it like that.Probably lacking in power compared to other rounds, but she can shoot the 380 enough to be good with it,without lots of hand punishment. For women I personally think comfort in shooting makes them shoot more and that means they know their guns better.I definitely don't want her to be scared of what her pistol is going to do.Defending yourself should be comfortable to do.That thought shouldn't even be in the back of your mind when you are thinking about saving your, or another's life.

The Federal HST in .38 SP +P expanded in testing to .74" with about 13" penetration (denim over ballistic gel), which is pretty good. I may stick with that in my S&W 640. For the Glock 26, I'm still looking.
Come and take it.

I haven't found any problems with any decent load in revolvers. The one thing I do is use round nose bullets in speed loaders as they chamber much easier. There is one revolver I concealed carry a bunch that is a 5 shooter and practice speed loads. No need to even close the cylinder!  Carrying factory rounds is a good idea as well.  My full size 45 auto likes anything 230gr. The much smaller 45 likes 180 gr. ammo It's just more accurate with lighter stuff, not a recoil issue.   :)

I have a harder time picking out concealed carry holsters than ammo!  ;D

Everybody has different likes, but I use leather holsters across the board except my pocket holsters (DeSantis Nemesis is an excellent pocket holster). Leather is flexible, comfortable and doesn't make noise if you bump it on something. Years ago, I bought a hard kydex holster and took it back the next day - it printed under my shirt like there was a brick in there and I absolutely hated it. That was my first and last plastic holster.
Come and take it.

I like leather as well. Some work but most don't. Your build comes into it, too. Some guns have very limited choices.  I do have a kydex for carry otw for hunting that was basically custom made, a 23 round 9mm.   :)

leather is quiet, it's comfortable as long as it fits you right,  I think it looks better.   I do have a few kydex holsters and I will use them on occasion where I may need the holster to keep it's shape a little better while re-holstering and that's more of a case for IWB holsters.  I can and do make my own holsters every now and then more so for some special use,  plus  perfect gun and body fit.  These are hand stitched or double loop laced.  I do like high quality LINED  leather holsters and high quality double thickness glued and stitched  leather gun  belts usually  1 1/2 ".  once you wear it for awhile and get the new feel and stiffness out they are a good as they get imo,  they are well worth the hundred + bucks as long as you don't grow too much and have to pass it down to your wife or kids, then they grow too much and have to pass it down to the grand kids.
