6.5-300 - Impressive!

6.5-300 - Impressive!

After years of using my 257 Weatherby, I decided to pick up and try out a new Backcountry Ti 2.0 in 6.5-300 with Swarovski Z5 3.5-18x down in North Carolina.

Weather was in low 30s at daybreak and mid 50s by days end.

My 55th consecutive year hunting with my dad, 4th with my 16 year old son and 36th with my younger brother.

I had just finished setting up a couple of shooting “sticks” for my dad and turned to see a spot in the treeline that had a new “lump” where a hole had been before.

I knew that spot was around 300 yards away (289 yards away according to my trusty rangefinder, measured after the shot - I don’t have time for that before).

I quickly took a look through the binocs and saw a fair set of antlers and that his left side was quartering towards me.

The 127grain LRX entered just in front of his left shoulder and exited his right side just past his diaphragm.

Here’s a sapling that was near his right side when the shot hit.

Took a leap and that was it.

Wow that's pretty cool how the sapling caught the spray/shock from the shot. I've never seen anything like that. I think my 6.5-300 Wby load is the same 127gr Barnes LRX you're using. Looks like it did the trick! I also like that kicker/fork on the buck's right antler.

Thanks for sharing your story! We've had some good ones on here lately. Like you, I cherish anytime I get to spend with family in the deer woods.

Nice shot Paul, a very nice cull buck taken there, and a nice "over the years" story. I'd say the 6.5-300 is a bit more rifle than the 257 Wby, and in Backcountry Ti 2.0 a great new rifle.  I believe the 257 Wby would have had the same results, but then, you never need an excuse for a new Weatherby ;) Great landscape pictures.

The more I hunt with this cartridge the more I like it myself as well as the backcountry design for hunting rifles. I was always a traditional mark v design guy, boy these things grow on you!

Congrats on a great hunt and cheers to keeping the tradition going my friend!

Congratulations Paul, nice buck and great story. Every season I’m torn between my 257s and 6.5-300s, the only solution I’ve found is a shoot off at the range!!!
