Hi all,
First post in the forum, I didn't see this issue addressed anywhere else, but if it has been, please point me in the right direction, and I apologize.
About 2 years ago, I finally bought myself a new rifle, a Mark V Weathermark chambered in a 270 Wby. To this point in my life everything else in my arsenal has been hand me down, or bought second hand at auction. After firing it a couple years off factory ammo, I'm looking to start into load development for deer, elk, and moose. While this will be primarily a hunting rifle I want to be shooting more. While I know the Wby calibers get much larger then the 270, I will admit that after a couple boxes my shoulder...... has felt better.
So I ordered the accubrake online, I figured it would have a nice seamless fit matching the barrel contour and colour. After install there was a noticeable size difference. The attached pictures illustrate my point. The measurement of the barrel diameter right before the thread protector is 0.610".
I'm the first to admit I am not a professional gunsmith, but every time I've seen a muzzle brake on a rifle it's been the same size as the barrel or larger, not smaller. Because I bought this online, but from a brick and mortar store, I'm wondering if maybe the brakes got switched in the wrong packages or something? I emailed Weatherby customer service, there response is below. I must say they didn't fill me with confidence.
"Unfortunately, due to slight tolerance differences during the manufacturing process we cannot guarantee a seamless fit when purchasing an Accubrake. Rifle models that come with an Accubrake have a seamless fit because the barrel threading and brake are milled and turned together. Although you might have a slight drop off at the threading shoulder, your Accubrake will still perform to specifications."
Has anyone out there had to deal with this issue? Is this just the way it is? I know it's cosmetics, but it just looks goofy to me.
Thanks in advance,
Dave
