    just bought a accumark in 30-06
the muzzle brake has a I/D of .450
is this normal it seems a bit big for the caliber

I have asked that because I noticed very little reduction in recoil and the muzzle brake was not noisy

The % gain on a 30-06 will not be a whole lot.Way over bore capacity rounds get the highest % of recoil reduction.

well I tried a .330 brake and what a difference
much les recoil but the noise is horrible

I have factory brakes on my 6.5-300 and 300 wby both backcountry models - I sight in with brakes take them off to confirm zero and hunt without them. because of the blast, make one mistake and forget your ears - you'll be listening to a ring like I do daily because of a 308 with one that wasn't necessary but it had one and I was sighting it in.

If I'm shooting at the range they have merit, for hunting you better really need it - IMO and yes they  will scare everything off in the woods! LOL

the only rifles I have that i'll hunt with a brake end in 378 - if i ever get something that starts with a 4 it will too.

I was disappointed but the rifle is supper accurate with barnes 168 gr tots

needed the brake because at 77 I am getting recoil shy

will probably get a 308 and shoot 130 gr tats

but I still think that Weatherby is misleading with the brake

one size fits all that is poor ingeneering

A top-notch gunsmith I know made a muzzle brake that had too much of an angle to the fins. The brake looked like a mini version of what goes on the famous M-110A2 artillery piece. The resulting back blast was significant to the shooter so that brake was removed in lieu of one that looks like an Accubrake. 
The smith told me brakes are generally at least 0.2” larger in diameter than the diameter of the bullet. This is to account for any moisture inside the brake so the bullet won’t touch the wet area of the brake. You don’t want the inside diameter of the brake matching the bullet caliber.
Lastly, some rifles have the same point of impact with the brake on or off. I have a 280 Remington like that. I also have a 9.3x62mm Mauser that has a 3” lower point of impact if the brake is off.

I would have thought 2 hundredths of an inch instead of 2 tenths of an inch in diameter would be enough of a buffer.

Like a .257 would have a .277 brake ID
