My neighbor sent his G F out to move his Tundra out of the way so he could get his lawn service truck and trailer out. She starts it up and backed it up in the street with difficulty. The roommate comes out and has the same problem. I tried to tell them to release the emergency brake to no avail, non English speakers! They finally used enough gas pedal to ovecome the brake. When I told the lawn guy about it, he laughed. His English is good. My Creole sucks!  ;D

The way I see it, if people are too lazy or too arrogant to learn a little English after coming, any resulting difficulties are their own dang fault. I know more Spanish just from paying attention than some who've been here for years know English.
Come and take it.

I think it should be mandatory that if someone comes to one's country to live, they should be only allowed to live there if they speak that language or is willing to learn.

A lot of the time I think they know more than they let on just so they don't get bothered.Especially when they think they are in trouble.
Retirement; The art of doing very little, very slowly

Expert; Someone who knows so much about so little

6 of the 11 occupied houses on my block are people from other countries. Most are Haitians and most speak English. Look them in the eye and say your shoe is untied or your fly is open. What they do next tells volumes about what they understand. Almost all of them are afraid of my dog.  I do get along with almost all of them, one exception.  ;D

I believe the immortal words were uttered by Winston Churchill who stated that "The British and Americans are one people divided by a common language".

My wife took he citizenship test 30 years ago and one requirement was to speak either English of French.
She whipped through her test so fast she was able to get into a swearing ceremony  quickly but as her way out of where she wrote her test they were giving one to a older Chinese lady with an interpreter. Chance are that lady had lived here for years but never learned English. We lived beside and across the street from two families that both ran restaurants and the grandmothers never spoke English to the family.

You have to arrogantly try to not learn in such cases. Whenever I have traveled to foreign countries, I always learned some basic words and phrases to try to communicate and show respect for the people there, even just for staying there a week or two. To spend years in a country and not know a damn word of the language is just pure arrogance and being stubborn.
Come and take it.

The people that don't speak English here have been in country for a very few weeks. Us taxpayers flew them into Miami.
