It's always interesting to read about those encounters.  :)

That's a big 'ol griz. I suppose if the .340 WBY isn't with you, just use the 10mm.  ;D
Come and take it.

They were lucky !  fortunately there are some very powerful 10mm hard cast ammo with heavy bullets out there Underwood, Buffalo Bore, Doubletap to name a few.    If you are casting your own LBT bullet designs (Veral Smith)  LBT  burned down in late 2022 and in 2024 he had a stroke,  Magma Engineering  (my child hood friends)  retired this March,  equipment sold, best casting equipment ever made and they also  bought out Star size lubricator and made those also along with other  machining  & fabrication,   there are other mold makers out there hopefully will take up the slack,  but if you can find any LBT molds or Magma Molds I would highly suggest getting them now from any other source before you can't, a side note the LBT molds I have are all hand cast made from (aluminum),  Magma molds are special Iron and are specifically cut for Magma high speed automated equipment or the smaller Master Caster.   Seems like most of the old school guy's are gone, some of the new lead bullets are now powder coated,  I'm sorry they look butt ugly when coated over lube grooves IMO,   there are some un-grooved cast molds out there designed for powder coat or plating.  sorry got side tracked there.

When it hits the fan, whatever you have handy is the best. If I ever go into griz country again, I still will chose a revolver. I am most comfortable with one. That would be my Model 57 in 41 mag. with hard cast bullets. :)

Quote: "In one account, the guide yelled, “Stop. Don’t shoot the skull!”  The initial wound was to the bear’s hind leg, leaving the bear mobile. The guide’s first shot might have proved fatal, eventually. Two of Tyce’s three shots from the 10mm hit the bear in the neck and back, incapacitating it.”
No explanation on the initial wound being the bears hind leg? Tracking to recover a wounded bear has everyone on High Alert, which is different from hunting elk, etc…and being attacked by a bear. You are aware you're in bear country, but the elk your stalking is top of mind. Hence a surprise attack. Just saying two different situations. First one, everyone is on high alert, second one, well we've learned from our own comments on all the great Bear Survival stories Dino has provided, as to how we should be ready.
This account leans heavy to the 10mm, while giving credit to a couple of other worthy calibers. Anyway I started looking around for a 44 mag and came across a short barreled 44 mag lever gun that might also fit the bill for large bear.

Yes, the hunter's shot left a lot to be desired. The guide's shot with the 375 was rushed and still not good. Getting anything at the close range with  even a short barreled rifle that close comes down to luck and nerve. I think the hunter needs more rifle practice with the bad shot that put them in this bad spot to start with!  ;D

The guide poked the bear to see if it was dead,  seriously !  Guiding 101 don't go poke somethng until you absolutely know it's done.  if the eyes are closed it's not dead, sit there at a distance and wait for awhile, you will know when it's time,  when in doubt shoot again but don't go poke it.  guy here about 15 years ago shot a huge Black bear in the head one  shot killed it,  low and behold it was probably a world record Bear , not any more.  not being there personally it sounds like a cluster Fxxk.  guy's tracked it for 2 miles ? might want to have a plan,  his hunting companion was 50 ft away out of sight !  another seriously,  was there only one rifle between the hunter and the guide ?  when I was a kid a doctor friend of my dads out elk hunting shot a really big 6x6 bull he went over and grabbed the antler and oh yea it got up on then the scramble started he shot it again by that time it was a  couple hundred yds away it dropped but this time he waited.

Yeah, who just walks right up to a freshly shot griz and gives it a poke?  ;D
Come and take it.

Looking at the article again this morning, there is a bit of an explanation for the initial wounding. Quote:  "Tyce had wounded a large Kodiak bear in the last two days of the hunt in a shot at a moving bear from 200 yards with a borrowed rifle."
Apparently he never got a shot at the bear while bow hunting, so he borrows a rifle (that he’s never shot and trusts(?) that its sighted in right) and takes a shot with it at a moving bear at 200 yards. We don’t know at what pace the bear was moving or how clear the shot was, but in the excitement of the moment he borrows a rifle and takes a shot? A big bear like that and the last two days of the hunt may have been too much pressure to take a good shot.

The guide doesn't look real smart either! Allowing that shot was not bright among other mistakes.

One other thing. Quote:  "The 10mm has become a popular handgun to carry as a defense against bears. Light, with 8-15 rounds available, relatively easy to shoot compared to a .44 magnum, with power close to the .41 magnum".
While the 10mm and the 357mag can be close in power, the 10mm is no 41magnum.
