And the rifle for the 2024 deer season is…….
« on: August 08, 2024, 03:39:30 PM »
The past two years in SW Kansas have been a mess regarding good numbers of mature deer. More rainfall this year has helped turn the tide somewhat with the availability of food and water. It is still a long way from what we had from 2007-10. That would be about two or three generations of White tail and Mule deer.
Knowing what I do about the possibility of a short range encounter (as in under 100 yards) and a 400ish yard shot, I’m most likely going taking a 308 Win as my primary and a 270 Win as my backup. Neither rifle was made my Weatherby but I still like them.
What is going afield this season from other Weatherby Nation members?
Of all the gin joints in all the towns in all the world, she walks into mine.

Both good choises!  If I get out hog hunting later this year, my 300 Savage will be my first and my Marlin 35 Rem will be my second pick. Most of my shots are short ones. 50 yds or less is typical.   :)  Good luck!

For deer my choice would be my .240 Weathermark. My backup would probably be a 99, but unlike Grouchy, mine is in a .250 AI.

For the past several weeks when I have been "going out for a shot" as we say down here, I have been using my lovely little Savage model 14 chambered in .250 Savage (250-300). It wears a Leupold 3-9x40 scope and is extremely accurate with my 86grn Hornady SP reloads. Have been knocking over a few pigs with it.

I still revert to my first true love - 257 weatherby lol - i cheat on occasion and take others mainly 240 weatherby. For paid hunts on bigger game we will choose accordingly but for deer these two fit the bill well here in texas.

Well…not sure if I’ll chase deer or not. Mule deer numbers are still down a bit in Wyoming.

If I’m not successful in archery season, I’ll probably chase elk with my new 7 PRC from Hill Country Rifles (see photo).

Nice looking rifle. Have you worked up loads for it?

Actually no.  :D

I had HCR mount the Swarovski scope and install/tune in the ballistic turret.

So, I just had it set up for Hornady 175 ELD-X factory ammunition. The rifle really shoots well with that ammunition.

It’s kind of hard to have a company build and tune in a rifle in with hand loaded ammunition.

Most likely a 25-06. Big enough for anything I usually see.

I usually take 2-3 rifles from the safe and have a shoot off! Which ever has the smallest group is the winner!!! I usually start with a 257, 6.5-300 and 270 win. for deer hunting. With cataract surgery coming in September things may change!?

That way you miss all the fun (frustration) of developing a custom load. >:(

1974 custom shop,240,has the Jaeger factory single, crisp 3lb or 3oz set trigger, customized stock by Westhunt, jeweled bolt and follower that make the action slicker than cat shit on a linoleum floor, checkered bolt knob, and 24 inch pencil barrel.Fixed Leupold target 12X scope in Conetrol rings.Shooting the original Barnes 85 grain Triple Shock factory,Weatherby ammunition.Even though my barrel is only 24 inches I still get within a few FPS of the advertised velocity of 3550 FPS

If I was to ever get drawn again it would be my Weatherby Vanguard 270Win.

I had to give my oldest grandson his Winchester #70 in 270 win as he got his hunter safety

Ha! Ha! True! I just had to start with something and luckily the rifle shoots the Hornady ammunition really well. I’ll likely tinker with it for a while and develop a hand load for it.

I have a Mark V Bronze in 7mm Weatherby. I bought it to go to Alaska, which that hunt never happened. So l have only taken one Antelope with it. Getting it out this year for Deer and Antelope
