Pet Loads for .308 w / 165 gr. Accubonds

Pet Loads for .308 w / 165 gr. Accubonds
« on: August 12, 2024, 08:32:57 AM »
I'm loading some test rounds for a freind.
Who bought a Browing x bolt in .308
I am loading 165 gr. Accubonds. But I don't have alot of powders that work well on the .308
I have loaded some with RL 15 and Varget.
But I was wanting to try a couple more.
Imr 4350 seems to have very slow velocity.
Other powders I have for it are. IMR 4895 / H 380 / H 335 / benchmark  / win 760
If anyone can recommend a good loading with those powders. Please let me know.
Thank you
Mark

I have loaded tons of 308's. The only  powder you mention that is in the Nosler manual is IMR4895 for that bullet. Check with the powder manufacturerer on the others. I haven't used that powder. I use IMR4064 the most and Varget second. What works in my rifles may not apply to your friends. I would use start loads just to be safe. I have a Howa and a AR-10 in 308. They like really opposites in prefered loads and bullets.  Good luck with it!   :)

I don't use 165 Accubonds in a 308, normally I will use Sierra, Hornady boat tails, sometimes bulk Win and Rem.  If I had to choose a powder for most loadings & bullet weights in 7.62/308  it would be one of the 4895's, good accuracy decent velocities a middle of the road powder.  higher velocities with 165's I will use Varget and it's generally good accuracy.  I do shoot semi-auto Military service rifle in 7.62 so I need to run middle of the road powders H-or IMR 4895  to not over port pressure the system.  bolt guns  BLC-2 , IMR 4064,  IMR 30-31, 4895's are all decent it just depends on what the rifle likes, but I would run them on a Chronograph ,  I would stay away from 4831 type slow powders in the 308

I have had good luck with IMR 4064, and H 4895 in, 300 savage and 308 win. Used the Sierra loading manual for load data, for 165 grain Sierra and Speer bullets

I would bet that Winchester Super X loads have Win 748 in them

Thank you All
I went with the IMR 4895. If none of these shoot better than factory.  I will have him spring for a lb of IMR 4064.
Thanks again.

Both my .308 rifles love Win 748 with 150grn projectiles and Win 760 with 165-180grn projectiles. I use 48grns of 748 with 150grn Corelokt projectiles in both rifles (a Vanguard and a Rem 7600) but have also worked up a load using 51grns of 760 behind the 165grn Woodliegh PPSN and 48grns of 760 behind the 180grn Woodliegh.

Thanks BB I won't hesitate to try the 760 if the others don't measure up !

I load for several rifles that I don't use premium (expensive) bullets. My .300 savage and .35 Whelan fall into that category. Their max velocities top out within the velocity range that traditional cup and core bullets do a fine job. My Saint Victor is also in that range. I have found that IMR 8208 XBR gives fine accuracy but CFE 223 gives up a little accuracy for a bit of velocity. My favorite bullets are Sierra 165 boat tail and Hornady 165 boat tail. By using more traditional bullets I can either save a little money or shoot more for the same cost. Either way it's a win win situation.
