Remington Moment
« on: September 08, 2024, 11:19:21 AM »
I took my Remington model 700 ML to the range just to chronograph the muzzle  velocity to compare with the 450 bushmaster.  Shooting the same bullet.  With 3 pellets 150 grains  of win triple 7 It  just went over 2000 fps. Compared to the 450 BM at 2200. I have the chance to hunt lower MI farm land wich is shotgun only or certain straight wall cartridges. But I thought I'd see if my ML can equal the 450 BM it would be good enough.
But my first shot seemed to go off instantly. I wasn't sure what happened. I have never had it happen to me. And I have owned this ML for 25 years and never touched the trigger. So I reloaded it and it went off with very little trigger pressure.  The 3rd shot went of as soon as I flipped off the safety.  That was enough.  In tearing it down now to see if the trigger has some corrosion build up. But I don't see any. But I will test it as soon as I put the bolt back together.  Needles to say A Bagara Ridge rifle in 450 BM is in my future.  I wish Weatherby made one in there Vanguard line.

Good thing you tried it at the range first!  A friend of mine went with the 350 Legend in a straight wall area in Marylamd. He rerally likes it.  :)

The trigger is definitely failing.  Firing pin fired as soon as the safety moves to fire. I would have used 3 pellets the last time. Do get a deep hole poked in it.

I have a Rem 700 ADL that has never been worked on or anything.  I had two AD one while hunting, as soon as I disengaged the safety it fired.  The other was at the range, and it happened when I closed the bolt.  Rifle has been sitting in the safe since.  I've been thinking of getting a Timney trigger to get it back to business.

Remington unfortunately has had their share of bad triggers. I'd change out that trigger for a Timney or comparable immediately.
Come and take it.

Yes I took it to Williams gun site. And they put in the replacement trigger for $97 bucks while I waited.  But whats really bad this 700 wasn't in the time frame for the recalled triggers. So I have now replaced 2 of my 4 Remington 700's I'm worried they all should be replaced.  I will have to go online and look into this more. I bought my boys each one for graduation too.

I'd be inclined to replace them all (at least eventually) - better safe than sorry. In the meantime, it may be wise to not carry them around with a round in the chamber.
Come and take it.

Put a Timney trigger in all of them and you will never look back. Best thing you can do to a Remington 700.

I have had 3 Remington rifles and a Sako rifle have unplanned discharges. One was in my pickup (Rem 722) with muzzle in the floorboard. One was while unloading that same rifle in my office, and the other was my Mohawk 600.All were while closing the bolt.I have fixed the problem with the Mowhawk 600,but the 722 just sits even though I can't make it do it again, but just don't trust it.The Mohawk 600 was just a very dirty trigger mech. The 722 trigger has something definitely wrong with it internally. The Sako discharge happened while hunting and it has been fixed. The complete rifle had been hot blued and the trigger had not been properly mounted to the action.Cleaning it and loktiteing the screws and aligning it better, than what it was, fixed the problem.

It is very important to always have the muzzle pointed in a safe direction,NO MATTER WHAT,when handling a rifle or any firearm.

I have 3 Remington rifles, all 700s. A.222 ADL purchased in 1979, a custom 30-06 rebarreled and chambered in 6.5 X .280 AI, and a 700 Classic in .35 Whelan. All have stock triggers but I did adjust the trigger on the .222 to let off at 3 lb. I have dropped tested the rifle by dropping 6 to 8 inches on a carpeted floor with no failures.

It is my favorite varmint rifle between a Ruger .22-250 and a Sako .223. It's accuracy still astounds me.

Dino I have also done the bounce test to my 700 bdl 7mm mag which is the only trigger I ever adjusted.  But now I don't trust it.
I will be swapping to the Timney Elite Hunter triggers. Starting with my 7mm mag and my twin boys 30-06's
Then my classic 223
What a pain. I always use to have a eye out for older 700's but not anymore.  Unless it's a must have and is worth doing a trigger job on it

I have 4 Mark V's, I love them and wouldn't trade them off anything, but none will shoot like that 700 deuce.
