Dementia
« on: October 29, 2024, 11:51:26 AM »
When the storm hit here, 2 sections of my neighbor's stockade fence came down. I propped them up temporarily. My neighbor tells me yesterday that we'll fix them today at 0900. Next thing I see is him going on a walk at 10. I had the tools all set up and ready to go at 0845. He forgot what the plan was!  When I asked, he got all angry with me. He is in his early 60's. I do think he has lost it! It took me a bit to figure out what happened.

Dementia strikes everyone differently. While age can be a factor, I'm beginning to believe it isn't the most important factor.

Genetic disposition, head injuries, strokes, drinking, drug use, etc. It's horrid no matter it's cause.

The anger was the dead give away. I can certainly fix his fence on my own but I still don't see me spending my time and money on his fence. His wife is the boss there and makes that very plain.  I did ask him a few  years back what he got her for father's day. He'll get lost on his daily walk soon enough.  "On Golden Pond" comes to mind. Sad!

Dealing with someone with diminished mental capacity is always a touchy thing. You don't know when they are having a good day or a bad day. For anyone with a family member in this situation, you have my understanding and sympathy. I think it is best to remember those afflicted for their good days and good things.

It is a touchy situation to deal with, especially if you have an idea that it's leaning that way. Start out with general greetings like good morning or evening and something about the weather? You step right into it saying something like good morning how are you. Keep it lite and open, like, How about them Yankee's, they finally remembered how to play ball. ;D

Is this a confession,Derrill?   ;D

I think I'd stay away from that fence. They might accuse you of various BS and then try to sue you, get you arrested or something. Dementia can cause some bizarre behavior.
Come and take it.

It's propped up with galvanized pipe. It ain't going anywhere. It keeps my dog in my yard and the dogs they dog sit in theirs. A real hurricane here would have the  entire fence down. The sections were frisbees in the cat 3 storms here.
