Quick Release scope rings———How secure are they?
« on: November 06, 2024, 05:34:02 AM »
A Gunbroker deal has me with a Fibermark topped with Leupold quick release rings. I have zero experience with such rings. I also have no need for them. (Has anyone had to get a scope off quickly to use on a different rifle?)
Can the mounts and rings be counted on to remain secure?

I have used them in the past to be able to use the open sights on a rifle. If there are no iron sights, I don't see the point. The scope would re mount without affecting zero.   :)

If money were no object the Old European Claws mounts be my choice but at over 700 bucks last I checked you would almost have to have them built.  I found a wonderful set trigger 7mm Mauser Mannlicher stock without the rings ,  great price and had to walk away from it because of the  custom claw mounts and lack of fitted claw mount rings,  basically they are hand made & fitted.  you normally see these on DG rifles or other rifle where you might have a need to pull a scope in an instant and use your back up iron sights.  The way I have went since Picatinny rails have become more the rage,  if needed on iron sighted rifles I can take a little Swiss Army pocket knife with a little set of pliers and just unscrew the tactical ring nuts and take the scope off,  it's pretty quick to do, or carry a little 4" crescent wrench in your pocket.

The ones I was using were very simple thumb screws, no tools inolved and very cheap in price.. It also made using the scope as binoculars without aiming the gun. They were not as complex as some think.   ;D

I have QR scope rings on several of my rifles. They hold just fine on big kickers and retain zero after being removed and replaced. A couple of my rifles I have taken over seas wear them just in case something goes wrong with the scope it has on. I usually take a 2nd scope in a set of QR's pre zeroed as a backup.
Another of my rifles is a switch barrel so it has a low powered scope when using the .375 Ruger barrel and a bigger scope when using the 6.5x65 RWS barrel.

I have had several with QR rings in the past. All had iron sights also. Wisconsin was one of the places l used them. You get snow that sticks to the trees and underbrush, getting in your scope. Iron sights are better in those conditions. It would zero well when putting the scope back on. When l was a kid you would see a lot of tip off mounts

I have a CZ550 .375 H&H with iron sights installed. I have a set of Talley quick release rings installed and they work great.

I have a set of Leupold quick release rings on a Remington 700 .338 Ultra Mag. I ended up removing the iron sights from this rifle, but the scope rings are great.

I only have experience with Talley and Leupold quick release rings.

I have a custom CZ-550. and I used QR Alaskan Arms to mount a Trijicon 1-6x24 on this rifle.  Why I used QR, well, since this rifle was going to be used for dangerous game (Cow Buffalo & Lioness), I wanted to have the option to remove the scope and use the sights, just in case something went wrong.  This rifle made two flights to the hunting destination, and the scope was dead on, no adjustment needed.

I don't have any either because I've never had the trust that remounting would be precise. I was pleasantly surprised to read the comments that they are actually precise. I agree that the only real need would be a quick switch to irons.
