300 Weatherby Magnum Ammo Find....
« on: January 29, 2025, 05:08:44 PM »
Found a couple of boxes of Weatherby Select 180 grain Hornady Interlock for $30 a piece so I snagged them. I have used the Hornady Superformance in 30/06 which is a tipped interlock on deer with success.

Wondering how these non-tipped interlock in 300 Wby mag will perform on medium to small size game? Anyone have experience with these?

Thanks!

Great find, at that price especially. My 300WBY likes those bullets best in reloads, and it's sub-moa with many different bullets. Mine likes the 180 grain flat base spire points  a touch more than the boat tail ones.(The 180 grain factory Interlocks are the flat base ones I believe, which my 300WBY likes also.) They perform spectacularly on deer and vermin (ground squirrels, starlings, sparrows) alike. God bless and good shooting!

Thanks so much! They are accurate for sure and glad to hear they work on deer well!

Other than a FMJ, I think that any 180 gr hunting bullet from a .300 Weatherby would perform well on deer or smaller  game.  Before the availability of the vast knowledge of the internet, I made one shot kills with a .22 LR on a number of deer. (Montana does not have any caliber restrictions for big game hunting.)

I've never even considered shooting a starling or sparrow with any bullet from my .300 Wby.  I think the result would be a puff of feathers and a red mist.

That pretty much describes the result of hitting vermin with a .300 Wby. In the spring especially, sparrows and starlings land all over the shooting lanes. The ground squirrels have populated the lanes too. They're like mini prairie dogs. A small game license covers vermin, which there is no closed season on. I like to stay legal!
