Greetings Weatherby Nation.  I just completed my bison hunt. Truthfully, it was more of a harvest than a "hunt". Nevertheless, it was a freezer filling meat acquisition. 210 gr Barnes TSX from my .340 WBY.  Happy Thanksgiving to all.

Congratulations. That's some good eating there. How about a little story about the hunt, when, where, how?

Wonderful, congratulations!

BTW Ridgerunner, are you a member of the Africa Hunting Forum?  There is someone there with your same screen name.

Thanks for asking Dino.  Obviously, there are very few opportunities to hunt wild bison in N. America. There are several private herds on ranches which sells hunting opportunities for the (semi/non-wild) bison they raise. Such was my case. I simply went online and located a private ranch near me and booked a hunt where I would pay a certain price for a specific class of animal. In my case I arranged to harvest a three-year-old bull that the rancher wanted to cull out of his herd. My motivation was strictly for the meat which in my opinion, is better than beef.  The total cost for the meat and processing amounted to about $13.00/lb. (no bones).  On the appointed day, I drove to the ranch, met the owner and we drove to the fenced field where the bison were grazing. I picked out the kind of animal we both agreed upon and took a head shot at about 100 yards.  I don't think that qualifies as a real "hunt", but I am sure my family will enjoy the meat.  Plus, I have a great admiration for these animals which as you know nearly became extinct. And here I am in 2025 still able to "hunt" bison.  Which for me, given what has happened to bison, is remarkable.

I agree on the flavor and quality of the meat. We have a local ranch that raises and sells bison at local markets. You are definitely equipped for many unique cookouts in the near future. Enjoy.
