New Weatherby Rifle
« on: September 23, 2009, 08:15:58 PM »
:)  I can still recall ads for Weatherby in outdoor life when I was growing up dirt poor. I have always wanted one and finally decided to get one.
My childern are all grown and it's just the mrs and me. I have given most of my firearms to the kids, and they all enjoy hunting. I traded in my Rem  7mm. I am now the proud owner of a Mark V, inn 338 Win mag. In less than a month it'll be in the field for moose. I will be geting a scope for it this week.Sugesstions welcome
I believe it to be a Japan made late 1980's rifle. It has a stock with only checkering, no accents and is s/n H245820
So that leaves me with this new to me rifle, my 44mag lever for deer a few .22's and a shotgun. Life is simple  :)

Keninon:  Congratulations of the new rifle. I'm sure it will meet your needs perfectly.  Talley or Warne mounts topped with any good scope in  2 x 7, 2.5 x 8, 3 x 9, 4 x 12  and the highest  power 4 x 16.  Big game rifles I won't skimp on optics,  but you don't have to break the bank either.  Figure any where from 200 up to 500 on mid priced brands such as Zeiss Conquest, Leupold and Nikon, a lot of guy's like the Bushnell Elite series, any of those brands you can't go wrong.  If I had my choice it would be Zeiss  3 x 9 followed by Leupold Vx-3 in 2.5 x 8 or Vx-2 in 3 x 9.  Good balance of field of view and power.  Everyone has their own preference and criteria.

well a big congrats to you keninion on your new rifle, isn't it great to get something that you have been eye and wishing for. I agree with zonie you can never go wrong with quality optics and yes spending four time the price does not always get you four times the quality. If you will be hunting moose and not shooting long distances then stick with a variable scope of lower power settings this will be better in heavier timber during the early morning and late afternoons were light is often an issue. I have seen many a guy with scopes that will go up to 20 or 24 power and they will never ever need that. But then when in heavy timber they are at 6.5 or so and can't find what they are looking for due to small field of view and or dark images Makes me just kind of laugh inside..
Have a great season and best of luck
Tony
