Alaska Fall Bear
« on: January 13, 2011, 06:54:13 PM »
A few days ago I received a message from Terminator. I was asked if I would share my experience when hunting black bear in SE Alaska last September as well as any photos.

Tonight I will start to give a written account from the start of my preparation. I will discuss all of it and will provide photos. But, I do not promise magazine quality photos. Forgine me for that.

Instead of here, I will try to put my account in the "my profile" area. Here, I will discuss any aspect of the hunt that any Spike Camper desires as well as answer any questions about it.

No, I will go to "my profile" to start.

Marishka:I just saw the last accounts of your hunt.Congrats on your kill and thanks for the informative info of the hunt.I had thought about this kind of hunt but now don't know if I would be up to it.I am sure it was a harrowing experience in the storm but good to see how the folks lived where you waited out the storm.

Terminator

We escaped the effects of the storm by diverting to Kake, Alaska. Kake is a Thlinget village with a population of 300. When the storm blew over we returned to Petersburg without any incidents.

I hope that you will give an Alaska hunt a try. The Spring hunts are less physical because the bears are on the beaches eating the grass that grows there and, I believe, any seafood thay can find. So, even though you cannot shoot from the boat, you can spot and then position yourself for a shot at between 100 and 250 yards. The result, dead bear! So, do it and let me know about you fine experiance.

I do not know if I responded with a report on this. My 2010 Alaska Black Bear hunt was on Kuiu Island where I used my .300 Weatherby loaded with 250 grain Hawk bullets and downed the bear at 219 yards by my rangefinder. The bullet entered just in front of the right rear leg and was retrieved just in front of the left front shoulder. It caused massive internal damage. The bear, after being knocked down by my shot, jumped up onto a ledge about 6ft high ands dropped. When my guide and I got there, I gave it a finishing shot because it was still alive and moaning. Alaska Fish and Game gave it an age of 17 years, an old bear. It is now a rug.
