I have seen mixed results with Hornady Ballistic Tipped (SST's) with their Interlock bullets. I have had much more reliable results with Nosler BT's. I use them in a 30-06 and 270 Win bolt actions exclusively. I got away from the really thin jacketed SST Interlock. The bullet was more explosive than anything else. The Nosler are more heavily constructed. That said for whitetails, which are no more sturdy than antelope, I would not hesitate to use a BT bullet if I were going with a plastic tip. It will come down to what is best suited for your use and confidence is a big part of that. In a 270 WSM, I now only use a light jacketed 130 gr Gameking with blistering results. When I did go to Nevada a few years back I used the same rifle for Antelope. At that time I was using a bonded Hornady with an SST. The bullet, admittedly worked great. It was a 275 yard shot. When I used the same round at 100 yards on deer in New York, the results were more erratic. I think you want to consider things like SD and whenever possible lean to the heavier side without giving up too much of the performance especially on longer shots. Its the balancing act of right too for the right job. In a Semi-auto 7400 30-06 I use a slowed down 180 gr Speer Hot-Core. It performs the best as I need it to in that rifle for the way I use it to hunt (its basically a brush gun and a half). That said, I would NOT take that combo outside of the heavy timber hunting at all. In that same camp I was in, a guy was using a 300 Wby with a 150 gr. commercial Hornady 150 gr bonded. He had no problems with that round at all. He shot a pronghorn buck about as far as mine. The guide I had swears by 25-06 with a 117 gr BT bullet. He called it the ultimate loading for them.
