This year I am hunting turkey in california. I don't know really much on how to score the turkey(what's a big tom look like). can you use a rifle on them, do you need tags for them. Just making sure when does season start. Thank you.

You will need to check with the California DNR to get the exact rules and regulations for Fall Turkey. I would guess that it is shotgun only also.

Bronson:The longer beards( 10 inches or longer )are usually considered the best birds.Long spurs are wished for but you usually cant look at them close enough to tell.Birds with multiple beards are also desirable.

Roger.........good call, if you are close enough to see spur length save the shot shell and reach out and ring his neck :D
Where I hunt in Ontario a 10" bearded Tom is a fine trophy and a double beard is rare
