Agree with zonie,
I have a .257 and .270 and ballistic wise they are basically twins but I do like the heavier bullet option of the .270 and of course the .270 gets the nod when it comes to ammo cost

Everyone else here is wrong, just buy a 30-06!      Just joking but I believe it to be the rifle every big game hunter should own if they are limited to 1 rifle hunting multiple places and game. Its not the sexiest but stuff just falls dead in front of it and its cheap and easy to shot. My2ยข

I've shot Elk & Bear & Moose with a .257 Wby & A .270 along with many other calibers. DEAD IS DEAD and they all ended up in my freezer. The .270 would be a lot cheaper to buy ammo for if you don't reload. I got it now... BUY BOTH!!!!!  ;)

Both the .257 Weatherby Magnum and the .270 Winchester have mild recoil and will do their job on deer but as said before the .270 Winchester has heavier bullets and they cost less.  You could always get a .270 Weatherby Magnum and have the best of both, the heavier .270 bullets and similar speed and energy of the .257 Weatherby.  As for a heavier caliber I would suggest going with a .300 Weatherby since it doesn't have as heavy recoil as the .340 Weatherby does.  No I don't know what experience you have in shooting but it's better to work up to heavier calibers so you can learn to the basics without getting pounded which will result in you shooting more and having fun.
Nothing is better than a Weatherby, big bore magnum, or a Colt.

I think on average at least today,  guy's get magnum mania, there are definately times when really big calibers are needed , but for the most part if you can't kill it with a plain jane 30-06 it just aint dying.  Unless you are going after the great bears or african big mean animals do we really need these super magnums for most hunting , I don't think so. Not that magnums are a bad thing I have them,  but I also don't shoot or hunt with them as much as lesser calibers even on elk.  If I were hunting griz yea then I'd feel definately more comfortable with a much lager caliber,  but deer and ocassional elk the 270 and 257 are fine.  Just got to hit them right with good bullets.   The only advantage I see with the big flat shooting magnums  and this is from experience is really off angle shots and overly extended ranges on elk and up sized animals,  if you hit one wrong regardless of caliber it's not a good day, and usually requires follow up shots.   Been there done that a few times.

ONE GUN? Wow, I`m in trouble! ;D  One gun, either 30-06 or 270 Win are adequate for most anything.   :)

So I'm fairly new to hunting but want to purchase a rifle, I hunt mostly white tail an mule deer in WA state. My theory is that I would purchase a smaller caliber rifle, and later on a larger caliber rifle if I start getting into elk an bear hunting. I've heard the weatherby vanguard s2 is a great bang for your buck rifle and am kinda set on it but torn between the .257 wby mag or .270 win?? Then down the road look at getting a .337. Is this a good idea or would looking into something in the middle be a better bet?? Any advice appreciated!

I have several Wby cartridges,240,270,7mm,300,30-378, but not the 257wby, it's my next one !

Either the 257 or the 270 will kill things dead if you do your part,in the end ammo for the 270 will be slightly cheaper and more readily available then the 257wby, that's what the main difference will be.

I'm a big fan of Weatherby Cartridges, fast, flat and good down range energy, but with all the quality/premium bullet offering in all calibers now a days it's hard to go wrong with either of the calibers you mention.
Even going with a 30-06 and using 165gr premium bullets I have taken Elk,Moose,Mule Deer all with out issue, good quality bullets and shot placement is key !

Stick to using Nosler Partitions or Barnes TSX or TTSX bullets and all will be good.

I would be more concerned with putting quality mounts such as Talley Lightweights and buying a quality scope such as a Leupold VX3 3.5-10x40,
here's a picture of my Vanguard S2 240wby

I have shot deer with many different calibers. They all were just as dead as any others with the right shot. I have a 338 Ultra Mag for the big stuff, and numerous smaller calibers. I am going out west for Mule deer in Wyoming later this year and after soul searching I admitted I always wanted Roy's favorite caliber. I used this trip as an excuse and saved up and traded up to a brand new Accumark in 257 WBM. Its AWESOME!  Dead is Dead, but there is something to be said about you when you have a Weatherby on your shoulder!  Good Luck.
