The 8mm Rem Mag never caught on like it was expected to. That doesn't mean it won't do the jobs it was intended for. A 8mm-378 wouldn't do anything that the 338-378 can't do. I agree that there are Weatherby cartridges very close to each other as far as calibers and capabilities for taking game animals. Let's not forget that sales are what keep a rifle line going. Are the sales of any 8mm rifle cartridge in the top 30 sold in North America? That is a listing I would love to see.

I think Wyominghunter is just about spot on,  most of the big game and elk especially I have taken has been under a  hundred yards.  Sometime's elk every now and then 150 to a little over 400 yds.   Prairie dog shooting &  coyotes the sky is the limit I'll plink at them at a thousand yards doesn't mean I hit them,    I consider them vermin.    Now there are times where long range hunting is almost the way it's done considering the openness of the country.  AZ  Coues deer hunting in certain cross canyon  areas is mostly long range propositions.  It's  usually thick brush where multiple people using high power bino's is a must.  The guy's I hunt with are not run of the mill shooters,  they practice, practice,  practice,  and use long range calibers that shoot 1/2 "  or better,   Coues aren't very big deer so any 24 caliber or larger which can hit consistently at 6 to 7 hundred yards is needed,  although most of my friends use 30-378,  300 wby, 300 panther, 25x 300 ultra mag & 6.5 x 300 ultra mag,  Rem  300 ultra mags, 7mm mags and myself a 257 mag that I have dialed in.  We all use people to spot just like prairie dog shooting.   My practice is usually 600 yards and farther I got a cool little area I can stretch it out farther with a road I can drive to the target.   If it's Mule deer or Elk I won't attempt these really long shots I can almost always get closer,  Coues deer I make an exception.   Some people may think that's wrong and that's OK.

Paul do you load for your 8mm and if you do would you mind sharing it?  Two years ago I bought one and had it refinished but still haven't christened it.  The load I'm using for now is the Normal Custom Loads in 200 Accubond that MidwayUSA sells.
Nothing is better than a Weatherby, big bore magnum, or a Colt.

The best 8mm Rem Mags are the ones necked up and blown out to form the 358 STA and the 416 Rem Mag....  ::)
I shoot cases with a belt because I feel the other cartridges need to pull their trousers up.

It took a little while but finally did this …
Thank you Wayne York of Oregunsmithing for boring this out to .323.

30-378 / 8mm-378 / 338-378

Many more bullets from many new manufacturers than when I first mentioned this.
Nosler Partitions, Swft A-Frame and Sierra Game Kings on hand.

Need to mount a scope and hit the range.

Loaded a dozen 200gr Nosler Partitions over some N568 but after I do a test run I think I’ll try some Hammer and Barnes next.

Owning a 325WSM, you will find very few bullet choices for high velocity 8mm rounds.

There are more now than when I got my first 8mm Rem Mag in 1977 or thereabouts.

Take a look at the latest offerings from Hammer, Cutting Edge, Northfork, Barnes, Nosler, Sierra, Hornady (ELX), and Swift They all have something that should hold up on big game as they do for the smaller and larger calibers.

Man this is super cool! Thanks for sharing. The 8mm-378 sounds pretty dang cool. I bet that thing is a screamer. I love 8mm/.323 stuff. It just doesn't get the love it deserves, especially here in the US. I hunt and shoot with 8x57, 8mm-06, and 8mm Rem Mag, with handloads ranging from 160gr Barnes TTSX up to 200 gr Nosler Accubonds and 220 gr Sierra gamekings. You're right, the options today are much better than they were even just 10+ years ago.

Beautiful Mark V rifle with nice looking furniture... love it man. Enjoy it! Have you shot it yet? I bet its got just a touch of recoil :)

I’ve always enjoyed my 8mm Rem Mag and have taken plenty of game with it - mostly Nosler 200gr partitions and 220gr Swift A-frames.

Just ordered some Hammer 198gr Power Hammers.

I mounted the scope today and hope to get to the range with it next week if not sooner.
Have a new Athlon chronograph to try as well, though I’m still partial to my Oehler 35P and 3-screen setup.

I’m sure it has a bit of bite but no more than my 338-378
