The three things that come to mind first are Hypothermia, carbon monoxide poisoning,or food poisoning

At least they went out doing what they loved ! Having had 2 real close encounters with lightning, I'd bet it is a pretty painless way to go.

Good point!  Not sure if they even heard the strike before they were meeting their creator.

I don't know if I would say it was a painless way to go, I was walking across a hay field when a storm rolled up and was within 200yds of home when I was struck in the head by lightning. It felt like I had been hit in the head with a hammer and driven to the ground and yes it hurt like hell. My mother was on the front porch call me to run for the house but it was a little too late.
To this day I have a white patch of hair on the top of my head where the lightning struck me.
It scared the heck out of me and my mother.

Survivng a lightning strike comes down to where your heartbeat is. If it is contracting, the chances of dying go up rapidly. If the heart is expanding, the odds of surviving go up. After being on a pole that was hit and having my Telco truck hit , I did some reading on the subject. BTW, both times my fly was welded shut. That is fairly common.

I know a guy that had his back broken by lightning. I've had cows killed by it and also have had oil tanks struck by lightning and the tops blown off.I've also gone up on a tank battery before to gauge the tanks and just happened to see a small flame burning from the vent pipe.A storm had gone thru the night before and lightning must have struck the vent pipe and started that flame burning.I've always wondered what would have happened f I hadn't seen that flame burning and opened that sealed hatch to gauge. It could have been bad.

A guy and his dog were hit a half block away. He had a metal leash on the dog and sneakers on his feet. The dog became the path and died right there. The guy lived.  I have seen tons of lightning created problems in my 30 years at the telco.

Lightning find a safe place until it passes !  lightning hit our old house corner of the garage went to ground in the rebar in the concrete blew out 18 inches,   split the corner garage framework, blew out all the electronics, TV, computer and other things.  guy's had a couple  horses out in a wet open meadow  lightning hit aways away killed the horses.  local motorcycle rider with bunch of other riders  pulled off the blacktop and lightning hit and killed one of them.   you would think being in a houses garage would be safe it ain't,  an old way of grounding a house was ground to rebar in the stem wall orc concrete slab  I'm  not sure if they do that anymore ,  we did our new house with a separate grounding rod.
