I was in the Sierra Madre mountain range further west than Centennial.

No established wolf packs here. We do get the occasional wolf that comes WAY south or one that crosses from Colorado, but they don’t last long.

No one is interested in any wolves getting established around here…

I was driving to Jackson one morning several years ago and right at the DuNoir valley turnoff there were two of them standing there like they owned the place. I couldn't believe how big they were.

We’ve had a couple cross the border between Walden, CO and Riverside, WY, but the ranchers on the Wyoming side have eliminated them.

I meant to ask you.  Did you call this bull in, or was it spot and stalk?  Either way, I would have been extremely happy taking him, especially during archery season.  Oh man, and you packed him out in two trips.  Wow!!!

I hunted Steamboat Springs in Colorado, and my best friend shot a cow.  They left me (unarmed, just with two skinning knifes) on the mountain while they went to drop off the gear and get the packs.  I stunk from the blood and guts, and I had never been so afraid in my life.  The area was prime Mountain Lion and Black Bear area.  We had seen a bear the night before.  So, I basically sat between a pile of guts and meat waiting on my buddies to show up so we could pack this thing up and get out of there.  I'll never forget that night.  LOL!!!

I was able to call him in with a cow call. In this area, using elk bugles are mostly used as locator calls.

It just depends…sometimes cow calls are effective and sometimes they are not. Cow calls tend to be a little more effective the week leading up to the peak of the rut when bulls are collecting cows. Once a bull has 6-12 cows, they are pretty content and don’t take chances gathering one more cow.

I’ve chased elk for many years and I learn something new every time…
