Just got back from a late September archery elk hunt here in southern Wyoming. I got a small 6-pt bull with a 40 yard shot; he went about 100 yards.

Heck of a pack out. Got him at 10,340 ft. elevation, a mile off the road, and about an 800 ft. elevation gain. Two trips in/out to pack him out in one morning used up about all the gas I had in the tank!  :)

He’s a decent archery bull in a general area…

Good job, lots of work but you made it pay off. Congratulations.

I always tried to hunt above the road. ;)

Although there was considerable effort involved, I absolutely agree…hunt ABOVE the road.

My body would still be there under a hind quarter and pack frame if I had to pack it uphill for a mile with 800 ft. of elevation gain!

Congratulations on a really nice 6pt elk. What sidearm were you carrying during the dressing and pack out?

I carry a Smith & Wesson Model 60 .357 Magnum (5 shot).

We don’t have grizzly bears in this part of the state (yet…anyway), so the largest predators I have to deal with are black bears or mountain lions.

I have encountered black bears in this area; luckily they have run in the opposite direction.

I'm assuming you were in the Centennial area, any wolf packs around there?
